What we carry
UN 3480 lithium ion batteries on their own, and UN 3481 batteries inside equipment or packed alongside it. That covers phones and laptops, power tools, medical devices, home and commercial battery storage units, loose e-bike and e-scooter batteries, and packs coming back from customers. We collect damaged and defective lithium batteries under special provision 376, and batteries going for recycling or disposal. A complete e-bike or e-scooter is a different entry again, UN 3556, so tell us whether you are sending the bike or just the battery. One exception worth knowing: a battery that is hot when we arrive, or that has been hot or smoking at any point however long ago, does not travel on a standard collection. It can still be moved under a separate procedure, so tell us and we will set it up properly. If your consignment is not on that list, tell us what it is and we will assess it before we accept the job. We would rather turn work away than carry it wrong.
Why lithium batteries are different
ADR gives lithium batteries no limited quantity relief and no excepted quantity relief, so a consignment is either partly exempt under special provision 188 or it is fully regulated. There is no comfortable middle ground. Once a battery is swollen, leaking, vented, physically damaged, or simply cannot be checked before it moves, it becomes damaged or defective under special provision 376, and that brings individually packed batteries, tested packaging, specific marking and specific wording on the transport document. Air freight is a different rulebook again, with limits that do not apply on the road, and the two get mixed up constantly. We have all of it in place.
What happens when you call
We confirm the UN number, the condition of the batteries and the right packing instruction before anything is booked. Batteries already packed and labelled are checked against the Dangerous Goods Note and loaded. Where a battery is damaged and needs packing at collection, our driver checks the battery, seals it in a leak-proof inner bag, packs it into the UN-certified box, applies the hazard labels and completes the DGN there and then, photographing each stage. Bigger batteries go in larger UN-certified packaging, and a battery that has overheated travels in specially tested containment packaging. The load travels secured, tracked, and driven straight to the delivery point. You get a signed delivery note as proof of delivery.
The compliance behind it
Damaged and defective batteries are packed to packing instruction P908 in UN-certified 4GV boxes with a vermiculite fill and a leak-proof inner bag, marked DAMAGED/DEFECTIVE LITHIUM ION BATTERIES, with the transport document carrying the words Transport in accordance with special provision 376. Batteries for recycling or disposal are packed and marked to special provision 377. The packing procedure and the checklist behind it are prepared with our Dangerous Goods Safety Adviser.
